Jury statement

The ideas “Monte Pixelino” and “A Green Valley: for people, for tomorrow.” were evaluated together by the jury due to their similar approach.

Both projects combine both landscape and buildings in one proposed use. Despite similar approaches, the two submissions have different perspectives and themes, which they each bring to the fore. What is special about both is that they take the roof shape as an expression of Stuttgart's varied topography and landscape and attempt to integrate it into buildings.

Both are equally usable from outside and inside. By using the roof landscapes, the outdoor space in particular is accessible at a low threshold.

“Monte Pixelino” focuses more strongly on the utilization concept, appears more permeable in contrast to ‘Green Valley’ and also visually connects the area with its surroundings. By raising the four corners, a playable, visible area is created in the middle of the roof. The uses and activities inside and outside are varied, some of them spontaneous. The issue of awareness is also addressed; the building is intended to be usable around the clock, for example by clubs and bars, and to carry life within it in order to avoid spaces of fear. The entry can allow both commercial and non-commercial uses.

In the “Green Valley” contribution, the open space itself was assigned a variety of uses such as culture and sport. The connection between outside and inside is clearly defined between the roof and the interior. The entry also refers to natural elements and their effects. The details of the concept are developed from a larger, regional perspective. These refer to needs and innovations in the Stuttgart area. Large-scale concepts are thus taken up on a small scale.

Both projects are excellent proposals that combine landscape and buildings and offer a variety of uses.

„A Green Valley“: für die Menschen, für morgen

Our vision for the A3 Rosenstein project is to create a space that prioritizes public areas, nature, and the unique identity of Stuttgart. Recognizing the primary interests of the citizens and the city, our plan enhances the city’s image and offers open public spaces where people can experience a close relationship with nature. We envision Stuttgart’s future as a green valley, transitioning from its current hilly terrain to a model of sustainable urban development. This green valley, an economic hub of Germany, will set a benchmark for cities aiming to embrace sustainability.

The A3 will be a central feature of the new main station surroundings, serving as a mixed-use building and public space area that provides diverse services and activities for residents and visitors alike. The building will include an information center and welcome point where tourists can learn about Stuttgart and Baden-Württemberg and become aware of all the activities available in the green valley. Additionally, the A3 will offer programmed public spaces to meet the current demand of Stuttgarters, featuring sitting spots with tables and seats, an outdoor amphitheater, a playground, flower and plant gardens, meadows, relaxation areas with laying seats, grass, trees, a water fountain, a plaza of cultures, and a hilly area for picnicking and walking.

An innovation center for sustainability will function as an association of companies and universities /education entities that promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and a transition towards sustainability in various areas such as mobility, construction, products, and services. This center will operate on a regional scale, welcoming companies and initiatives from Baden-Württemberg.

Sports facilities will promote wellness and physical activity, featuring a skating park, an indoor bouldering area, a walking track, and an indoor gym. The cultural aspect of the A3 will be highlighted through galleries and stages with a rotatory system, allowing flexible exhibitions and space usage for artists and creatives. This will be coordinated with the municipal cultural funding and local museums and galleries. The A3 will also house a food hub aimed at spreading awareness about the impact of our food habits and promoting sustainable nutrition. This space will offer workshops, local food, and information about the local wine culture.

A central station memorial will serve as a remembrance space for Stuttgart Central Station and its significance in the city’s urban development history, potentially incorporating recycled materials. Finally, the mobility hub will focus on car and e-mobility sharing services, with a testing space in collaboration with the innovation center for sustainability to try new mobility models. Reflecting Stuttgart’s dynamic landscape, the A3 will be a beacon of sustainability and urban innovation, blending diverse functions to serve the community and visitors.
Monte gesamt

Monte Pixelino
Our space for ideas should reflect diversity, create encounters and be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender, demographic group or nationality. The focus is particularly on unique themes and activities that are not yet available in Stuttgart's city center and offer a valuable addition to existing attractions.

Monte Pixelino is not a building in the conventional sense, but a landscape roof that is freely accessible from four points and can be used by Stuttgart residents at any time. From simply relaxing away from the hustle and bustle of the city to sporting activities such as yoga or badminton and summer concerts, the landscape can be used as the mood takes you.

Passers-by and visitors are guided to the area from all directions (park, city center). It creates no spaces of fear, offers a good overview and ensures safety and protection even late at night - an essential aspect of social control.

The high and low points of the platform reflect Stuttgart's topography and offer space for a variety of activities. The spaces below are thermally protected and used for exhibitions, maker spaces, social spaces and cafés. This mixed zone encourages interaction between visitors.

The main attraction is an inner-city viewing platform with a view of the surrounding hills, the television tower and the vineyards. The path to the platform is lined with a special feature: the Monte Pixelino. This homage to Monte Scherbelino allows anyone in Stuttgart to immortalize themselves with an individually designed pixel along the path.

One area is dedicated to outdoor sports activities such as skating, climbing and table tennis. In a community workshop, citizens can get help with repairs or help others. A community garden complements this area. There is also a “Maker Space” start-up center that offers space to develop and work.

Adjacent to this is the culture and citizens' platform. This area offers space for the exchange of cultural, urban and community interests. An awareness center and safe space for marginalized groups promotes solidarity and respect. The proximity to the main train station and the city center is crucial here.

The outdoor cultural area provides space for events such as concerts, theater, dance, cultural events and festivals. The city and associations finance these activities to ensure cost neutrality and access for all citizens.

To keep the district lively in the long term, there is a restaurant and club area that is used in different ways at different times of the day.
