Stuttgart's City Ring

Arnulf-Klett-Platz is to be transformed into an attractive station forecourt. To this end, Stuttgart's City Ring is to be relocated further north to Wolframstraße along its Schillerstraße/Arnulf-Klett-Platz axis.

The expansion of the City Ring in Stuttgart is a major infrastructure project that focuses on improving traffic management within the city center. The idea behind the City Ring is to manage inner-city traffic more efficiently while improving quality of life by reducing traffic in downtown areas. Bicycle paths are also to be established along the City Ring in the future. Currently, the City Ring runs along Friedrichstraße, Theodor-Heuss-Straße, Paulinenstraße, Hauptstätter Straße, Konrad-Adenauer-Straße, and Schillerstraße.

Once the new main station is completed and trains are running underground through the station, the area around the station will also be redesigned. This requires the City Ring to be relocated from Schillerstraße to Wolframstraße. The current route of the City Ring will thus be extended from 4.2 kilometers to 6.3 kilometers.

The aim is to largely free Schillerstraße between Bonatzbau and Königstraße from traffic. In future, only buses, bicycles, taxis, and delivery vehicles will be allowed to use the square.

The relocation of the City Ring will expand the traffic-calmed area in Stuttgart's city center.

The relocation of the City Ring will significantly relieve and enhance the area in front of Stuttgart's new main station. This will give the main station an appropriate forecourt – without the previously divisive effect of a busy main road. The new traffic routing will also improve connections between the main station and Stuttgart Rosenstein and the Europaviertel district, promoting closer links within the city center.

The relocation of the City Ring opens up numerous opportunities for redesigning and upgrading the newly gained space. An ideas competition is to be held next year to flesh out design options for the space and to obtain a proposal for the redesign of Arnulf-Klett-Platz and Schillerstraße.
