In Swabian we say Griaß Gott! We don't know each other yet, but that can be changed. Allow me, my nickname is ZEUS. That stands for Zukunft-Entwicklung-Urbanität-Stuttgart (Future Development Urbanity Stuttgart). I may look like one, but I'm more than just a building. I am a place - a place of transformation, but one thing at a time. The best way to tell my story is from the beginning.
The S21 project has freed up a huge area on the former railroad tracks in the heart of Stuttgart. A transformation process for future urban development was set in motion. It had to be clarified how to deal with the development potential and need for action of these areas. The Rosenstein project was born. In the IBA'27 showcase, the Rosenstein project became a high-profile exploratory project for dealing with future urban development towards a sustainable, liveable and networked city. The Rosenstein project inspired and provided orientation. Various large-scale projects followed throughout the city region. The dynamism and potential of this transformation chain was impressive. Prior to this, possible urban development perspectives were explored in prioritized areas and on individual topics on a small scale. The opportunities to explore conflicting objectives and synergies in terms of a holistic approach were limited.
The people of Stuttgart realized that they were missing something. How could the development opportunities of transformation processes for the entire city region be developed into fruitful impulses in the long term, far beyond the project horizon of the Rosenstein project? They finally found an answer as part of the international ideas competition for the A3 planning area.
As a place of movement and encounters, the A3 planning area is ideal for facilitating transformation. The site is directly linked to the S21 project and Stuttgart Central Station, it is a constant source of inspiration for Manfred-Rommel-Platz, it is the prelude to the subsequent Rosenstein development area and it is a point of reference for the adjacent Europaquartier and Athener Straße.
The place is inherently about arriving, bringing along and taking along. It has an impact on the neighborhood level, the level of the city as a whole and the level of the polycentric urban region. It is equal parts recipient and distributor, platform and stage, as well as breeding ground and laboratory for the coexistence of a mixed urban society. Where else, if not here, can the people of Stuttgart leave static one-way solutions behind? This place is made to be a catalyst and space for a recurring experimental transformation process.
This place enables an entire city region to take joint responsibility for setting the course for a Stuttgart city region that is also worth living in the future.
This place is me and this place is you. See for yourself what I mean.
