Urban planning idea
The urban structure is symbolic of its content: Flexible, cosmopolitan, diverse, innovative, visible, permeable.
The design of this building structure is reminiscent of a pastry bag and envelops interior and exterior spaces like an intricate dough. It forms amorphous shapes that embed themselves in the surroundings.
By overcoming the difference in height between the Rosenstein quarter and Manfred-Rommel-Platz, it does not form a barrier in terms of urban planning, but is a mediating form that opens up and communicates on all sides.
Content idea
Stuttgart is made up of a wide variety of cultures and stands for sporting, cultural and technical excellence. Everyone makes their contribution every day, shapes life in this city and thus becomes part of Stuttgart's history. The building structure should invite people to identify with the city and its history and to continue and enrich the present and future.
In order to create a lively place with social cohesion, a changeable mix of uses is planned that can be flexibly adapted to people's wishes.
The following approaches will be placed in interior spaces as well as in high-quality outdoor spaces with a quality of stay and filled with life:
- Open first floor as a WELCOME space
- Mobility hub for bike sharing and charging stations
- Outdoor activity areas, such as (water) playgrounds and sports areas
- BW-Meets-The-World in the form of a citizens' platform
- Hands-on exhibitions for young and old
- Multi-generational meeting places
- Music, art, dance and sports workshops
- Event areas for community cinema, discussion forums, international festivals and workshops
- Viewing platform with a view over Stuttgart
- Starting point of an urban cable car for sustainable mobility
Architectural idea
- As a beacon of sustainable construction, this building is made from 100% renewable or recycled materials or components.
- The façade serves as a power plant and supplies “THE MAULDÄSCHLE” as well as parts of the neighboring buildings and the Mobility Hub with energy.
- In addition, the façade is partially greened with soil-bound plants and is part of the biodiversity strategy. The soils are permeable. The building and its functions have a closed water cycle system, which means that all waste water is treated and solids are also recycled.
- “THE MAULDÄSCHLE” forms Stuttgart's largest Maultasche and presents itself to everyone as a civic forum and showcase for Baden-Württemberg with international and sustainable appeal. A new Stuttgart landmark.
