GLEISPARK STUTTGART - An urban open space between past and future.

The project area offers a unique opportunity to create a visionary urban space. In the course of this competition we present the GLEISPARK STUTTGART - an ecologically sustainable concept that combines recreational opportunities and a wide range of offers for the citizens and visitors of Stuttgart.

In the context of the further development of the existing planning for the area around the new underground railway station in Stuttgart, we are taking up the innovative idea of the light eyes (bubbles) and expanding them into an integral part of the new GLEISPARK. While the bubbles in the existing plan primarily serve to supply the station with daylight, the six GLEISPARK bubbles fulfil thematic and functional tasks that enrich urban life.

The preservation of the historic railway tracks as a cultural monument of the city of Stuttgart is at the centre of our planning. The tracks blend harmoniously into the planning area, preserving the historical heritage while creating a modern, functional space. The ‘W-Bubbles’ (forest, water and meadow) combine to form a natural space that contributes to the climate balance like a powerful green power station. The ‘RMK bubbles’ (Relax, Meeting, Culture) are used for social interaction and cultural encounters. Spaces are created here that promote dialogue and understanding in a wonderful way.

The historic railway tracks G1-16 are more than just relics of the past - they are the heart and soul of Stuttgart. Their essential preservation and integration are essential for the preservation of cultural heritage and the creation of a lively, historically anchored urban space. History is kept alive here, a place is created that inspires both locals and visitors and impressively conveys the significance of this historic location.

The combination of all bubbles creates a unique park, an urban open space that combines historical identity and contemporary quality of life.

Jury statement

The “Gleispark Stuttgart” proposal creates a public space in the form of a park that makes full use of the competition area. The authors present an ecologically sustainable project that combines recreational opportunities and a wide range of offers for citizens.

The central idea is to integrate the current track structures into the park. Six circular zones are proposed in this park, which incorporate the light eye structure of the station roof. Three of these zones, called “bubbles”, are places for social infrastructure and cultural encounters. The other three bubbles represent natural spaces: Forest, water and meadow.

A positive feature of the design is the green welcoming gesture for visitors coming from both Manfred-Rommel-Platz and the A2 sub-area. The park also creates a green gap from north-east to south-west. The proposed uses can be well imagined at this location, especially in the warmer months. Especially on hot summer days, the green and blue infrastructure should make for a pleasant stay. During the discussion, it was pointed out that there are no spaces planned for use in the winter months where people can warm up or protect themselves from the weather. Nevertheless, the park offers quality of stay all year round.
